We opened ISLAND BOOKS in 1993, believing that it was essential for Aquidneck Island to have an independent bookstore that would be sustainable for years to come. Over the years, we have met the challenges of big box stores, the internet, Amazon and e-readers. Through it all, the store has not only adapted but flourished through its unique blend of high-tech and high-touch, never wavering from its focus on books and a love of the community.

Decades of rearranging shelves, recommending books, hosting book groups and author events, doing book fairs, and tons of gift-wrapping have given us a richly satisfying life. Now – more than anything – we want this store that has given us so very much to have a new chapter with fresh leadership. The store needs someone who is ready to meet the challenges and opportunities of the evolving book industry while preserving the heart and soul of this community treasure. The business is quite healthy; sales and profits have consistently increased over the past three years, the staff has years of experience, and the community couldn’t be more supportive. It is a turn-key operation, practically debt free and quite profitable (for a bookstore) and is the most entertaining, enlightening and sociable retail atmosphere one could ask for.

A new owner with an appreciation for community and the entrepreneurial spirit needed to run a small business will inherit an independent bookstore with a long and rich history on Aquidneck Island that is prestigious, independent and beloved. It is of great importance to me that the store carry on after my tenure in good, capable, loving hands.
